8. Old Sheriff's Home and Jail
This black-and-white reveal is the Old Sheriff's Home and Jail built in 1885 and in 1886 the Fields family moved in. Mrs. Fields, wife of Sheriff Dorpheus Fields, stands on the steps of the jail, her new home. Currently this iconic structure nestled in Ellsworth’s downtown gives the city its historic charter. Since 2022 a dedicated committee has been formed to save the building. Volunteers see the third space as a potential venue for displays of civic artwork, small informal public gatherings, an educational resource for young people, and a permanent display of the city's history. For more information about the project or to support the revitalization effort visit the Ellsworth Historical Society.
